A message from Zach Herbers, Executive Director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam

"Dear Friends, In March of 2022, I began my tenure as Executive Director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam. The mission was to rebuild the Chamber following the COVID-19 pandemic, grow and diversify its membership, and broaden its network and activities with the goal of increasing connection between Canada and Vietnam. And now, just over 18 months later, the Chamber is in a strong and sustainable position, with a robust membership base consisting of many new and returning members, a unique and well-known brand, a record of supporting countless Canadian and Vietnamese organizations, and working with the Governments of Canada and Vietnam in growing bilateral commercial activity.

For me, some personal highlights from the past year and a half include:

  • Getting to know and engaging with each and every one of our members,

  • Hosting Canada Day 2022 and 2023 in HCMC in true Canadian style,

  • Resuming the Chamber’s longstanding signature events, and creating new events focused on growing the Canada/Vietnam bilateral relationship,

  • Celebrating the Golden Milestone of 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations between Canada and Vietnam at Reunification Palace, and permanently marking this historic occasion via the creation of the Inukshuk statue at the Saigon Zoo in partnership with the Canadian Consulate,

  • Representing the Chamber at countless trade shows, expos, and government, chamber, business and industry events,

  • Supporting trade missions and industry delegations from British Colombia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nova Scotia, Canada, to Vietnam,

  • Strengthening the Chamber’s relationships with Vietnamese government and industry associations, including with a MoU signing with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, and

  • Engaging with countless organizations from across Canada and Vietnam on a daily basis.

These are just a few examples out of many that come to mind. We’ve done so much over the past 18 months, and I'm proud of all that has been accomplished. I owe my thanks to our Board of Directors (past and present), the CanCham team, our members, and so many others for their involvement, support and contributions.

For me, it will soon be time to take on new challenges. Upon careful reflection, I have made the decision to announce that I will not be seeking an extension of my term past the spring of 2024. I intend to see through the completion of my term to the 2024 Annual General Meeting in March. In the meantime, I will continue to deliver on upcoming projects, continue to engage with our members, and support a seamless transition process to ensure that the next Executive Director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam is primed for success. As for what comes next for me - I expect to have more to share in the months ahead, and look forward to continuing to connect with you, the good people in my network, in the days to come. I also intend to remain involved with the Chamber and the great work that it does following the completion of my term."

Until then, and as always - the momentum continues!

Zach Herbers
